Anger gets a bad rap. We’re taught that ‘nice people’ don’t get angry, that anger is bad or destructive, that we should just ‘calm down’ and move on.
But here’s the reality: anger is a normal, healthy human emotion. Everyone feels angry sometimes. The question isn’t ‘Should I feel angry?’ – it’s ‘How am I handling my anger?’
That’s where the Anger Control-ometer comes in.”
What is the Anger Control-ometer? “The Anger Control-ometer is a simple tool we use to help people assess whether their anger is in the healthy zone or veering into problematic territory. It shows the progression of anger. Here’s how it works:”
Zones on the Control-ometer:
GREEN ZONE: Healthy Anger
- You feel angry, but you can pause before reacting
- You express your feelings clearly without attacking others
- You can problem-solve once you’ve cooled down
- Your anger motivates you to set boundaries or make changes
- You don’t hurt yourself or others
YELLOW ZONE: Warning Signs
- You’re getting angry more often than usual
- You have trouble letting things go (ruminating, replaying situations)
- You sometimes say things you regret
- People are starting to comment on your temper
- You feel out of control more often than you’d like
RED ZONE: Time for Help
- Your anger is hurting relationships (partner, kids, friends, coworkers)
- You’ve damaged property or gotten physical
- You’re experiencing legal consequences (arrests, restraining orders)
- People are afraid of your anger
- You feel like you can’t control it, even when you want to
What to Do:
“If you’re in the green zone most of the time, great! Keep doing what you’re doing.
If you’re in the yellow zone, this is your wake-up call. You don’t need intensive anger management, but learning some new skills now can prevent things from escalating. Consider:
- Reading a book on anger management (like our workbook ‘Managing Our Anger, Managing Our Lives’)
- Trying therapy to work on stress management
- Practicing the PAUSE technique (we teach this in our program)
If you’re in the red zone, it’s time to get professional help. Anger management coaching or therapy can give you the tools you need to get back in control. The good news? With the right support, most people see significant improvement in 8-12 weeks.
Anger isn’t the enemy. Unmanaged anger is. If you’re wondering whether your anger is normal, trust your gut. If it’s causing problems in your life, that’s your answer.
